Assam | Organization demands Govt to release Rs. 2000 crore to revive paper mills

To everyone's dismay, one of the leading employment generating sectors in Assam, the paper mills in Nagaon and Cachar, have remained shut for more than three years causing unrest in the State of Assam.

Addressing a press conference Assam Nirman Dal, an organisation working for the revival of the two paper mills in Assam stated that the Nagaon and Cachar paper mills are two of the most integral resources of the state.

“It has a total liability of Rs. 98 lakhs and the government if releases a total of Rs. 2000 crore, the two paper mills can be revived”, Upen Raj Nath, president of Assam Nirman Dal stated.

Further, Upen Raj Nath stated that, a total of 5,00,000 employment can be generated if state government takes the matter into consideration.

An employer of total 1,200 people and an indirect generator of livelihood for more than two lakh people, the two paper mills in Panchagram of Barak valley, namely Cachar Mill and Nagoan Paper mill in Jagiroad near Guwahati have remained shut since October 20, 2015.

This has caused much grief to the families of employees who were laid off after the shutdown. Unable to meet the expenses, a lot of people have ended their lives.

The employees have undertaken extreme forms of protest such as their declaration of committing mass suicide. They have blocked national highways multiple times.

Expressing their frustration over the situation, the Assam Nirman Dal condemned the Assam State Government for its inaction regarding the issue and stated that commerce minister Chandra Mohan Patowary should immediately resign from his post if he cannot take steps to revive the two paper mills of the state.

Moreover, it was also mentioned that the National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT) has passed a bankrupt notice to the paper mills.
