DISPUR: Assam MLA Pabindra Deka, formerly of the Ason Gana Parishad (AGP) who recently joined the newly floated Asom Gana Parishad (AJP) has officially resigned as an MLA. This assumes significance as the AJP party led by Lurin Jyoti Gogoi has set its sights on upsetting the applecart in Assam, where the AGP-BJP-BPG combine is currently forming the Government in Dispur.

Pabindra Deka, who represented Patacharkuchi Constituency, today tendered his resignation even as debate raged in the Assembly over the introduction of a Bill that will seek to withdraw the sponsorship of Madrrassas in the state.

"I am extremely happy to inform that I have quit as Assam MLA today. On December 15 last, I had quit the AGP as it has lost its regional nature as it supported the CAA. I had requested them not to do so, but no one listened to my suggestions which is why I left the party," Deka said.

There are speculations that four-five more sitting MLAs from AGP could quit in the coming weeks and join other parties.

Speculations have been doing the rounds that few other Congress MLAs could also join the BJP ahead of the assembly polls due in March-April next year. Ajanta Neog, a former Minister in the Tarun Gogoi-led Cabinet, recently resigned from the Congress and shall be inducted into the BJP in a day or two, she said. The Congress has 22 members in the state assembly.
