Assam: Social activist Pabitra Bharali loses the battle against COVID-19

GUWAHATI: Pabitra Bharali (56), a prominent businessman and social activist of Guwahati, has succumbed to COVID-19 at Mahendra Mohan Choudhury Hospital here today.

As a socio-cultural person, Bharali had so much in his bag as he was the treasurer of Jatiyo Dibosh Udjapon Samiti, Kumarpara, former secretary of Jai Hind Club, Kumarpara active member of Kumarpara Anchalik Unnayan Samiti, Shanti Sabha, Nayantara Club, Youth Athletic Club and many other organizations of Kumarpara.

Apart from that Bharali was a prominent businessman too. His father Padmaram Bharali and his family were popularly known as the 'Kalicharan Book Sellers' family.

There were many instances of Bharali when numerous poor and downtrodden people sought refuge under him and he had given them a space in his residence itself.

Devoting his life to social work, Bharali remained unmarried.

Assam recorded the highest number of single day 30 COVID-19 deaths over the past 24 hours. Currently the state death toll is at 1,360.

With 2,385 fresh cases recorded, the total state tally mounted to 2,58,961 so far.

The deaths reported during the day include 12 from Kamrup (M), four from Barpeta, three from Udalguri, two each from Bongaigaon, Dibrugarh and Sonitpur, and one each from Goalpara, Hojai, Jorhat, Kamrup and Tinsukia. The current death rate is 0.53 per cent.

On the other hand, the new cases include 1,099 from Kamrup (M), 181 from Tinsukia, 148 from Dibrugarh and 90 from Nagaon.

The state currently has 24,551 active COVID-19 cases.
