Assam: Panel on Clause 6 to Submit its Report by Jan 15

Guwahati, December 30, 2019:

Amid the nationwide protests against the amendment of the Citizenship Act, the 14-member committee on Clause 6 of the 'Assam Accord' is likely to submit its recommendations by January 15, reports Economic Times.

According to an ET report, the the committee will visit the two hill districts of Karbi Anglong and Dima Haso to interact with the people there, at the end of which, it shall submit its recommendations.

According to reports, the committee is meeting the time schedule and does not require any extension to submit its report.

The ministry of home affairs has set up the committee, headed by former Gauhati High Court Justice BK Sharma, on July 15.

It may be mentioned here that Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal recently met the members of the committee and asked them to submit their recommendations on time, amid mounting pressure from the anti-CAA brigade.

The panel has reportedly sought views, comments and suggestions on measures to be

taken regarding the reservation of seats in legislative houses and local bodies for the

indigenous tribal, indigenous Assamese and other indigenous people of Assam.

The Clause 6 of the 'Assam Accord' states: Constitutional, legislative and administrative safeguards, as may be appropriate, shall be provided to protect, preserve and promote the cultural, social, linguistic identity and heritage of the Assamese people.
