Guwahati, May 28, 2019:

The employees of Nowgong paper mill on Tuesday staged a protest in Jagiroad against the order of closure of the paper mills under Hindustan Paper Corporation Limited in the state by the National Company Law Tribunal.

Opposing the shutdown of the paper mill, protesting employees demanded the immediate revival of both the paper mills in Jagiroad and Panchgram. They also demanded the release of pending salaries of the employees. Both the mills are have been non-functional since March 2017 and October 2015, respectively.

The protestors also alleged that the government has intentionally dragged the matter into court and the industrial units go under the control of private parties.

The employees have also threatened to intensify their protest if the government fails to fulfill their demand.

It is to be mentioned that in recent times, many of employees of the mills have committed suicide. As per reports, the number of suicide cases has risen to 55 including both Nagaon Paper Mill and Cachar Paper Mill.

The employees of the paper mills have been protesting from a long time demanding the revival of the highest employment generating industry in the state and also release of the pending salaries. However, no action has been taken from the state government in reviving both the paper mills. In many time the government has assured to work on the issue but no development could be seen.
