Assam Police Prepares to Deal with 'Fake News' Menace Ahead of Final NRC

Guwahati, August 30, 2019:

Assam Director General of Police (DGP) Kuladhar Saikia spoke at length about security preparedness ahead of the publication of the final National Register of Citizens (NRC) draft tomorrow.

Addressing the issue of 'fake news' that is being circulated on social media, the DGP said that the Police force has been doing community to alert the people about the nuisance of 'fake news'.

"The OCs have been instructed to tie-up with the people so that circulation of any kind of social media posts which might cause problems to "communal harmony" and "peace and tranquillity" can be checked", said Saikia.

Talking about the politicians who have been stoking communal fires ahead of the NRC draft publication, Saikia said that the complaints against such organizations and politicians have been taken care of once complaints have reached the police.

"We have alerted the public to ensure that fake news is not circulated on social media, to reach out to the police instantly...", said Saikia.

For the uninitiated, fake news, also known as junk news or pseudo-news, is a type of yellow journalism or propaganda that consists of deliberate disinformation or hoaxes spread via traditional news media or online social media.

Over the last few years, 'fake news' has caused several controversial incidents. In the lead up to the NRC, many individuals and communities have been seen peddling 'fake news' to cause panic among the people.
