Assam: Senior Scribe Naresh Mitra Passes Away

Guwahati, December 9, 2019:

Assam-based scribe Naresh Mitra, who worked for Times of India, has passed away this morning. According to the attending doctors in Nemcare hospital, Mutra breathed his last at 5.45 am on December 9.

On November 23, Mitra, a senior journalist working with national daily was found with severe head injuries at an area under Bhangagarh police station of the city, police said.

According to reports, Mitra was on his way back home from his office around 10.30 pm, his colleagues said. Upon being found, he was rushed to the Guwahati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) by some unidentified persons.

Although initially it was initially thought to be a case of accident, the doctors at the hospital who operated upon him, told family members that injuries are similar to that of an assault—raising suspicion about the whole incident.

The last rites of the journalist, widely regarded for his environmental reporting, will be performed in the city and the journalist fraternity will pay their last respects to Naresh at Guwahati Press Club by noon.

Meanwhile, the Journalists’ Forum Assam (JFA) expressed concern at the suspected assault by miscreants on Mitra, and demanded proper investigation into the case.

JFA president Rupam Barua and secretary Nava Thakuria said in a statement, “We strongly demand a high-level probe into the incident where Naresh got injured on that night."
