Assam: Silchar quarantine centre escapees detained in Hailakandi

Two persons, who had escaped from a quarantine centre in Silchar in Assam, were detained by the Hailakandi district police on May 24^th, 2020.

The detainees are Rebul Hussain of Jamalpur under Dholai Police Station of Cachar district and Abul Azam Mazarbhuiyan of Jalnacherra under Jamira Police Outpost of Hailakandi district.

Both of them had escaped from the Don Bosco School quarantine centre at Ramnagar in Silchar on May 24^th, 2020 at around 4:30 pm, the Superintendent of Police, Pabindra Kumar Nath said.

Based on inputs received from the Cachar district police, the persons were apprehended by the Officer-in-Charge of Algapur Police Station at the Algapur Railway Station on May 24^th, 2020, midnight.

“On getting an alert from the Cachar district police that two persons fled from a quarantine centre in Silchar, the Hailakandi district police swung into action and traced out the persons at the Algapur Railway Station,” added Nath.

On being interrogated, they confessed that they had escaped quarantine. Later, they were handed over to the Additional SP (Hq), Cachar.

Following this incident, SP, Nath has sternly warned that the police would register non-bailable cases against those defying home-quarantine and institutional quarantine protocols prescribed for incoming persons for a stipulated period of 14 days.

The district police chief also urged the people to keep a close watch on the persons and their family members put under home quarantine and to report immediately to the nearest police station or health centre if they found anyone venturing out of their homes.

COVID-19 scenario in Assam

The SARS-CoV-2 (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus-2) has infected a total of 466 people and claimed four lives in the state so far. Out of 427, 402 are active cases while 57 have been cured or discharged and three have been migrated.

The state witnessed a massive spike since May 17^th, 2020. After detecting the first confirmed case on March 31, Assam reached 100 cases on May 17, and thereafter within eight days, the state cross 450-mark. On May 23, 67 cases were reported in the state which was the highest single-day spike.

Assam is followed by Tripura with 191 confirmed cases and Manipur with 32 cases.
