Assam Sons Conquer Mount Kilimanjaro

Guwahati, June 1, 2019:

Two daring sons of Assam have have conquered Mount Kilimanjaro, the tallest peak on the African continent.

The two mountain climbers cum adventure junkies -- Chandan Das and Shashi Prakash Roy -- unfurled the iconic Assamese Gamusa after reaching the Uhuru Peak, located in Tanzania (5895M/19341 ft Amslin).

The duo have said that they have successfully completed the summit with the blessings of the people of Assam. They were able to brave the tough weather of -20 degree Celsius and the wild wind and were happy to flutter the Axomiya Gamusa and raise chants of 'Joi Aai Asom'. They said that all their pains had gone away.

The duo hail from Gauripur in Amingoan in Assam's Kamrup district. They had first set out to conquer the treacherous peak in May. Hats off to these daring adventurers for going where few men had dared to venture before.

And speaking of Kilimanjaro, Mount Kilimanjaro or just Kilimanjaro with its three volcanic cones, "Kibo", "Mawenzi", and "Shira", is a dormant volcano in Tanzania. It is the highest mountain in Africa, with its summit about 4,900 metres (16,100 ft) from its base, and 5,895 metres (19,341 ft) above sea level. The first people known to have reached the summit of the mountain were Hans Meyer and Ludwig Purtscheller, in 1889.

The mountain is part of Kilimanjaro National Park and is a major climbing destination. The mountain has been the subject of many scientific studies because of its shrinking glaciers and disappearing ice fields.
