Assam Sports Officer Arrested in Bribery Case in Golaghat

Golaghat, September 5, 2019:

A team of vigilance and anticorruption have arrested the District Sports Officer of Assam’s Golaghat district on charges of taking bribe.

The accused, identified as Manorama Das (47), of Golaghat was caught red-handed in a joint operation of Golaghat Police and the officers of Directorate of Vigilance & Anti-Corruption.

The team was led by Deputy SP of Golaghat. Das was arrested while accepting a bribe of Rs. 30,000 from the complainant Nripen Ch. Dutta, who is the Principal of Dhekial HS School, Golaghat.

The bribe money has been seized from Manorama’s possession along with documents related to the case from the office of the District Sports Office.

It is to be mentioned that the Government of Assam has sanctioned a sum of Rs. 20 lakhs for upgradation of the playground of the Dhekial HS School, under Chief Minister’s ‘Samagra Gramya Unayan Yojana’, out of which 8 lakhs was already released and utilized.

In order to get the remaining Rs. 12 Lakhs of the said scheme, the utilization certificate had to be countersigned by the District Sports Officer (DSO), Golaghat.

It has been alleged that when the complainant approached DSO, Manorama Das for the countersignature, she demanded a bribe Rs. 50,000. For this, the complainant was to pay the bribe amount.

As per official reports, the complainant was unwilling to pay the bribe money, so he approached the Golaghat Police and requested the Directorate for necessary assistance.

Accordingly, a joint operation was led that constituted the officers of Golaghat Police and Directorate of Vigilance & Anti-Corruption, Guwahati, Assam, as per standard procedure in the matter of Golaghat PS Case No. 891/2019 U/S 7(a) of the PC Act, 1988 (as amended in 2018).

The accused have been forwarded to the Special Court in Guwahati, Assam
