GUWAHATI: One arrest has been made so far in connection to the suspected murder of a Guwahati scribe named Purbajyoti Chutia.
Iftikar, a resident, has been arrested for recently making threats against the now-deceased journalist.
"Chutia reportedly owed money to Iftikar. After a recent cheque made out to Iftikar bounced, he had threatened dire consequences against the journalist," said a source close to the family.
Another person with whom Chutia was talking on the phone for several hours yesterday is also being investigated.
"The family believes that this person -- whose identity has been kept under wraps -- could have a role to play in the scribe's death. His phone is being tapped," added the source.
Last night around 10:30 pm, Purbajyoti Chutia had gone down to the ground floor of his residence to turn off the water motor switch. When he did not return, however, his family became worried.
This morning, an extensive manhunt was conducted and the scribe’s body was found inside a one-and-a-half feet deep drain near his house in a mangled state, leading to speculations that he was murdered.
Sources close to the family informed InsideNE that Chetia did not have any enemies. He was also known to be suffering from hypertension.
