Guwahati, 21 December, 2019:

Thousands upon thousands of women from across the State of Assam have gathered at the historic Latasil playground on Saturday, to oppose the contentious amendment of the Citizenship Act. The all-women sit-in protest has been organized by All Assam Students Union (AASU).

Women from all walks of life -- including writers, social-activists, ass well as homemakers -- have all joined the peaceful protest against the amended citizenship act in a bid to protect their 'jati, mati and bheti' (community, land, and base) of the state.

Today, women from all the corners of the state -- Lakhimpur, Golaghat, Dibrugarh, Sibsagar, et al -- have organised peaceful demonstrations against the legislation with slogans of “Jai Aai Axom”, “Scrap C(A)A”. Moreover, they have demanded justice for the five martyrs of the C(A)A movement who were killed during police firing.

Earlier, on the last day of the 3-day Gana Satyagraha organized by the AASU, its chief adviser Samujjal Bhattacharya, lauding the women of the state, stated that the fairer sex been the in forefront of all the protests, marches and demonstrations. "The overwhelming activism (of women) to oppose the C(A)A is also exemplary", Bhattacharya had said.

Large-scale protests against the Bill-turned Act have gripped the nation. Many noted female personalities too have joined the mass movement against the CAA. In Bengal, Didi Mamata Banerjee has been leading massive rallies, demanding the withdrawal of the CAA, and warning the Narendra Modi-led BJP Government against implementing its proposed 'nationwide NRC'.

In Assam, where the protests initially began -- the movement is being led by many film actresses -- such as Prastuti Parashar, and Barsha Rani Bishaya -- are leading the chants against the CAA.
