GUWAHATI: Amid fear of the outbreak of new COVID-19 strain, two more UK returnees tested positive for Coronavirus in Assam’s Golaghat district today. The couple recently travelled from London to their parent’s house in Golaghat where they tested positive.

According to reports, Golaghat reported COVID cases after quite some time. The couple will now be tested for the new contagious COVID-19 strain.

Meanwhile, India has joined the list of 40 countries in suspending travel from the UK, where the mutated strain of novel coronavirus is rapidly spreading.

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), the mutant strain of the virus has a 70% higher rate of transmission and may already be present in several countries, even though it was "unlikely that a couple of mutations" could affect the immune system's response to an existing vaccine.

After Boris Johnson's shocking announcement about a new 'highly infectious' strain of coronavirus spreading across London and the South East of England, countries all over the world have begun closing their borders.

So far, 45 countries have announced a suspension of travel with the UK, leaving millions of people stranded just days before Christmas.

This comes as reports emerged of a 'new strain' of the deadly Covid-19 virus that could prove far more infectious.

The Prime Minister has cancelled Christmas for huge swathes of the country including London after he was told it was up to 70 per cent more transmissible.

Governments across the world have responded with new measures to prevent the virus from entering via travellers from the UK.
