Assam woman reportedly drugged & raped in Meghalaya; CM Conrad urged to help

GUWAHATI: A woman from Assam was reportedly drugged, raped, and dumped in a forest in Meghalaya in January of this year. She was reportedly en route to NEHU University from her hometown Guwahati.

This was brought to light on Twitter by activist Megha Kashyap, who claims to be a friend of the victim's. Yesterday, Megha posted a barrage of tweets in which she urged the police to investigate the matter and help the allegedly raped woman, whose identity she did not disclose. Although a case has been registered at the Jhalupara Police station, police are yet to take any action, Megha averred in a post.

Tagging the Meghalaya police and the state's chief minister Conrad K Sangma, she wrote, "A friend of mine was drugged, raped and dumped in a forest in Meghalaya in Jan when she was travelling to her NEHU hostel from Guwahati. She has been constantly retraumatized by the system and police who refuse to help her."

In another tweet she claimed that although an FIR was registered, a charge sheet is yet to be filed. "The police haven't yet given her the medical reports which they are supposed to by law," she wrote.

"She is a student and doesn't know much about how it works. We reached out to NGOs who are trying to get in touch with Meghalaya police but they keep saying new IO has joined or someone is not in office today," she added in another tweet.

Megha's tweets have caught the attention of Meghalaya Congress MP Ampareen Lyngdoh who has promised to investigate the matter.

"I am terribly sorry to hear this. Can you DM me the FIR number? I will take this up on priority," Lyngdoh wrote on Twitter, replying to Megha's tweets.
