Hundreds of students of Assam Women's University at Rowriah on the outskirts of Jorhat on Tuesday ended their 36-hour hunger strike they have been staging in front of the Jorhat deputy commissioner's office to protest against the government's decision to convert the university into a technical institute. The students have been demanded appointment of a permanent vice-chancellor to the university and develop it into a full-fledged one by providing necessary infrastructure.
The students lamented they were facing a lot difficulties in pursuing their courses in the university, which they said was a university "only in name" as there was no basic infrastructure not a proper administrative machinery to run the institute.
