Assam: Youth body demands recognition of Manipuri as associate official language

The Manipuri Youth Front of Assam (MYFA), Silchar in Assam demanded recognition of Manipuri language as associate official language of the state.

In this regard, the body sent a memorandum to the President of India through the Deputy Commissioner of Cachar.

In the memorandum, they have asserted the legitimacy for the inclusion of Manipuri language as an associate official language in Assam, as in Assam there are 102 Manipuri Medium schools recognised by Government of Assam and Manipuri language is being taught in the schools since 1956 to till day and many of the student have been passed out learning mother language.

“However, in the recent development announced by the Education Minister of Assam and earlier amended rules of APSC, it has been made mandatory for those candidate applying for a government job to know Assamese, Bodo or Bengali without providing any alternative language for those who learned different languages in the State of Assam which is also recognised under the 8th schedule of the Indian constitution in which one is Manipuri language”, Added in the memorandum.

Under the circumstance, the MYFA urged the government to amend APSC and include Manipuri language as an associate official language so as the Manipuri people can apply for jobs in their mother language.

They also requested the President of India to considerate the legitimate demand of Manipuris residing in the state and to include the language as an associate official language of Assam in the larger interest of Manipuri people inhabited in the State.
