Assamese 'Jati' will be Preserved in Museums after CAB is Enacted: Adip Phukan

Guwahati, December 2, 2019:

Asom Sangrami Mancha leader Adip Phukan on Monday said that Assam is on the verge of going back 40 years in time, to the pre-Assam Agitation days. Phukan also stated that the Assamese jati will be in museums, after the controversial Citizenship Bill is enacted.

Addressing the people of Assam through Facebook, Phukan said that the Assamese people are on the verge of losing their identity, and lamented that neither the State, nor the Central Government, seem concerned that the people could suffer because of the Bill.

Phukan lauded the students of the State for making their stand against the Bill clear, and said that the banning of CM Sarbananda Sonowal from his own University (in Dibrugarh) speaks volumes about the students' distaste for the Bill.

One thing is clear, the BJP party wants to bring Bangladeshi immigrants to Assam for their own political gains, Phukan said, adding that the implementation of the Bill could have disastrous ramifications for the Assamese people. "It is clear that the BJP wants to impose their ruling policy -- the one nation, one language (Hindi), and one religion (Hindu) policy", he said.

It may be mentioned here that the Government's announcement of re-introducing the Bill has been met with widespread protests across the states in Northeast India. The protests against the Bill have been spearheaded by the student organizations -- such as the AASU in Assam. Many University and College students in Assam have also been protesting against the Bill, which is likely to be tabled during the ongoing Parliamentary session.
