Assam's Detention Camp Death: ‘Declared Foreigner’ Body Yet to Be Disposed

Dhekiajuli, October 17, 2019:

Six days have passed since declared ‘Bangladeshi national’, Dulal Pal’s death in Assam’s detention camp but no initiative was taken initiatives were taken from the government’s side after his family refused to accept his dead body.

The deceased’s family had refused to accept the body after authorities declared him as ‘foreigner’. They had instead asked for his body to be sent to Bangladesh.

Dulal Pal’s dead body still lies in the morgue of Gauhati Medical College and Hospital.

65-year-old Dulal Pal, a resident of Alisinga in Assam’s Dhekiajuli was declared as a ‘Bangladeshi national’ in 2017 after his land documents from 1965 were not accepted.

He was suffering from multiple ailments and was admitted to the hospital on September 28. Paul died in the detention camp in Sonitpur on October 13.

Following this, Bengali Yuba Chatra Federation, the Dhekiajuli unit, along with Bajrang Dal and Hindu Yuva Parishad, staged massive protests and blocked roads over Dulal Paul’s death.

Meanwhile, Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Ripun Bora, along with MLA Ganesh Limbu, visited the family and questioned why he was declared as a foreigner and lodged in Assam’s detention camp despite having all the necessary documents.

The Congress leader also assured to provide all possible support for legal procedures.

Bora also demanded a high-level investigation to probe the matter and blamed Sarbananda Sonowal’s government for Dulal Paul’s death.

It may be mentioned here that five members of the deceased’s family also did not find their names in the National Register of Citizens (NRC), which was published on August 31.

Moreover, the Assam government in a reply to the Assembly question released a list of people who died in detention. The list included 25 people included a 45-day-old child and an 85-year-old partially immobile man.
