GUWAHATI: Situation turned tense in the Guwahati Neurological Research Centre (GNRC) premises after hospital authorities' declaration of the sudden death of a patient.

The family of the deceased, identified as Dadhiram Sharma, a resident of Bodoland Territorial Region (BTRs) Baksa district has alleged that Sharma had passed away about four days ago but the hospital authority kept the corpse and pretended to be curing it intending to charge undue money from them.

Sharma was admitted to the hospital on April 1, and after tests, he was informed he needed surgery because his lungs had developed blisters due to tuberculosis (TB) infection.

Since the operation on April 5, the patient had been given anesthesia on a regular basis and was in ventilator.

His family has claimed that they were told he was recovering. However, the daily medicines bill of about Rs. 40-50 thousand had raised concern among the family.

"We wondered why the patient was needing such expensive medicines if he was recovering," said a member.

The family members were not allowed to meet the patient for the past two-three days.

The family of the deceased has levelled serious allegations against the city-based hospital -- of plotting to loot over 10 lakhs in the name of treatment and medicines, although the patient had died four days ago.
