GUWAHATI: At least 76 people infected with the COVID-19 infected had died in Assam in the past 24 hours, taking the death toll to  2060.

On the other hand, the state reported 4,078 fresh cases pushing the tally to 3,19,632.

Of the total new fatalities, Kamrup (Metro) alone reported the highest number of 20 deaths, followed by Dibrugarh (6), among other districts.

Meanwhile, out of the total new cases, 1,107 were reported from Kamrup Metro, 352 from Dibrugarh, and 323 from Kamrup (Rural).

Assam currently has 41,978 active COVID-19 cases, while a total of 2,74,247 people have recovered from the disease so far.

A total of 93,85,117 samples for COVID-19 have been tested so far and 33,05,054 people have been vaccinated in the state.

Meanwhile, state chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma briefing the media in Guwahati yesterday said that if the COVID-19 situation in cities--Guwahati, Tinsukia, and Dibrugarh does not improve in the next week, the state government will be forced to take tougher steps to stem the spread.

The chief minister said, at least three major cities in the state, Dibrugarh, and Tinsukia, as well as Guwahati, have recently seen a spike in COVID cases.

However, CM Sarma denied any possible lockdown-like situation in the state for now.

However, depending on the situation in these three cities in a week, the state government might have to enforce more stringent restrictions, he said.
