Bangladesh terror group Neo-JMB has infiltrated Assam, confirms DGP Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta

GUWAHATI: Assam Director General of Police Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta has confirmed that Neo-Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (Neo-JMB) terrorists bred in Bangladesh has infiltrated Assam, across the border. Neo-JMB is a breakaway faction of the old JMB in Bangladesh, with links to international terror groups such as IS.

Confirming this to Inside Northeast, Mr. Mahanta stated that recruitments by the Neo-JMB have already been going on in Assam. "However, this is not new information. Around 25 JMB cadres are already being held in Assam Jails. However, there are small rings that continue to recruit cadres for these radical outfits. It does not mean that there is a huge presence of JMB cadres here with sophisticated weapons."

Mr. Mahanta also asserted that the local police administrations are doing their best to keep the radicalized elements in check.

"Had they not been checked, the terror ring would have grown larger by this point. Therefore, the Assam Police is doing its best to curb these elements to keep terror at bay," he added.

According to reports, the Neo-JMB is utilizing the network in Assam and north Bengal that had been created by JMB years ago. Cadres of the terror outfit are believed to be holed up on the north bank of the Brahmputra river.

Assam Police, on behalf of the State Government, welcomed the Border Security Force (India) and Border Guard Bangladesh for an informal interaction at Police Officers Mess, Kohora, Golaghat.

Mahanta's assertions have come amid the 51st Director General level Border Coordination Conference between India and Bangladesh, which is being held from December 22nd to 26th. This is the first time that the Director-General Level Talks are being held outside New Delhi.

DG BGB, DG BSF, Chief Secretary, Assam and Director General of Police, Assam were part of today's discussion. DGP, Assam, Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta spoke of the importance of such interactions, touching upon issues that affect both countries emanating from common borders, and the need for a synergistic approach to handle these issues.

Maj Gen MD Shafeenul Islam, BGBM (BAR), NDC, PSC, DG, BGB thanked the Government of Assam for hosting the informal interaction in the scenic landscape of Kaziranga National Park and stressed the need for enhanced collaborative efforts for achieving common goals.

DG BSF, Rakesh Asthana, IPS appreciated the initiative of bringing the DG level talks of both countries outside New Delhi to Assam, which shares a long International Border with Bangladesh and reaffirmed the commitment of BSF for a close relationship with BGB.

Chief Secretary Assam, Jishnu Barua, IAS spoke of the historical and cultural moorings between the two countries and stressed how bonding and cooperation come naturally for these two countries and their forces.
