Citizens took out a candle light rally in Guwahati on Sunday in protest against the infamous Batadraba gang-rape and murder case. Hundreds of people marched through the main streets of Guwahati holding placards with slogans like JUSTICE FOR BATADRABA RAPE CASE, GIVE DEATH SENTENCE TO RAPIST, RESPECT THAT GENDER WHO GAVE YOU BIRTH, JUSTICE DELAYED IS JUSTICE DENIED, ENOUGH IS ENOUGH, STOP RAPE NOW, TO SAVE ASSAM SAVE WOMEN FIRST. Eminent personalities like Dr. Akashitota Saikia, Shyamkanu Mahanta, Tinat Atifa Masood, Miguel Das, Mira Das besides others took part in the rally. The Protestors demanded strict laws to deal with rape cases. The protest rally was a initiative taken by INSIDENE Media House along with few NGO Prithibi, North East Network and Assam Peace Group.

It may be mentioned that a 13 year old class 5 student was allegedly gang-raped and set ablaze by pouring kerosene on Friday by a group of three youths at Dhaniabheti Lalung Gaon under Batadraba police station in Nagaon district. Though she was admitted to the Nagaon Civil Hospital initially, she died on the way to the Guwahati Medical College Hospital. Police have all the three accused involved in the crime.
