Guwahati, January 13, 2019:

It is widely believed that Bengali organizations have thrown their support behind the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016, which seeks to provide citizenship status to all non-Muslims from three Islamic countries, including Assam’s neighbouring Bangladesh.

In fact, Prime Minister Narendra Modi made his announcement of implementing the Bill from Silchar in Barak Valley, one of the most heavily Bengali-dominated regions in the country.

But the Bengali Samaj of Golaghat bucked the trend when they took out a rally protesting the implementation of the Bill.

The rally was taken to all corners of Golaghat town and demonstrators shouted slogans of "Joi Aai Axom".

The organizers of the rally, Himadree Mukherjee and Namita Singha, stated that the Bengali people consider themselves part of Assamese society and added that they are with the Assamese people in their opposition to the Bill.

They further added the need to deport all illegal immigrants, regardless of religion, who came prior to 1971.
