Guwahati, February 27, 2020:

One of the founding members of the separatist insurgent organization, the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA), Bhadreswar Buragohain, breathed his last at the Dispur Polyclinic in Guwahati, Assam. He was 73.

Bhadreswar Buragohain, who was a staunch believer in the concept of Assamese nationalism, was one of the first seven members of the separatist outfit, ULFA, and one of its founders.

In 1985, he was elected to the Assam Assembly from the Sonari Constituency. In 1990, he was elected as the Deputy Speaker of the Assam Assembly, and later represented Assam at the Rajya Sabha. Buragohain joined the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), that was born from the embers of the prolonged Assam Agitation against foreigners.

The last rites of the ULFA leader turned political head were performed in Guwahati, Assam.

Senior ULFA leader, Anup Chetia, mourning the veteran leader's demise, talking to Inside Northeast, says, "I mourn the loss of a great soul and one of the foremost freedom fighters from Assam. He was selfless in his resolve."

Assam CM Sarbananda Sonowal, Finance, Health, Education and PWD minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, State BJP president Ranjeet Kumar Dass, BJP AGP president Atul Bora, Jorhat MP and former Sonari MLA Topon Gogoi and a host of political leaders condoled the demise of the veteran leader.
