GUWAHATI: Jonai MLA Buban Pegu, who was the lone Gana Shakti Party MLA in the Assam assembly, and former national general secretary of National Students Union of India (NSUI) Debashree Bora today formally joined the BJP along with several others.
Apart from Pegu, whose joining was almost confirmed for over a fortnight after BJP strongman Himanta Biswa Sarma’s recent tour of Dhemaji district, and Bora at least 100 more supporters, including several from the NSUI, joined the BJP ceremonially at the party state headquarters here today, BJP official sources said.
Party state president Ranjeet Kumar Dass, MPs Dilip Saikia and Palab Lochan Das, Rajya Sabha member Bhubaneswar Kalita, state forest minister Parimal Suklavaidya and several other leaders attended the reception ceremony for the new members.

The NSUI leaders who joined the saffron party with state assembly elections ahead, included several from the minority community such as Mithu Ahmed, Iftikhar Hussain etc.
Welcoming the new members, Dass said the joining of the BJP by minority community youths was a proof that not all followers of Islam are Congress or All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) supporters. “It is also a testimony to the fact that the success of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikash, Sabka Viswash programme has convinced people of communities,” he added.
