Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) chief Atul Bora has made his intentions clear to break the alliance with Bharatiya Janata Party on Monday after the Centre confirmed to pass the controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016.
The announcement was made after the AGP chief Atul Bora along with other leaders met Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh.
Addressing the media, Bora said, "We tried our best till the last moment and we urged the Centre not to play with the future and betray the people of Assam just for some mere votes but the Centre is prepared to pass the Bill anyhow. The Union Home Minister has confirmed that the they will try the best to pass the Bill. We also tried to contact Chief Minister Sarnananda Sonowal but he did not show any interest which has hurt us the most. By this they have not only betrayed the people of Assam but also betrayed the AGP party so there is no question of the AGP being in alliance with the BJP."
It may be mentioned that earlier this morning, Bora along with other party members, met the Union Home Minister to seek support to oppose the Bill and stop it from being passed in the Parliament, but his please to the central government fell on deaf ears.
