GUWAHATI: Ahead of the Assembly elections in Assam, United People's Party Liberal (UPPL) president Promod launched a scathing attack on Congress and the Bodoland People's Front (BPF), which have entered into an alliance.

Boro, addressing a joint presser with BJP leader Ranjeet Dass and AGP leader Atul Bora, said, "As you have seen that in India, the party that ruled for the longest period, had propagated corruption and had failed to address pertinent social issues. Similarly, in the BTR, the party that ruled for 17 years, BPF, embezzled funds to the tune of Rs. 2,300 crore. There was corruption, violence. To change all that, we have trodden down a path of democratic struggle."

"We are a new party and have come forward with a regionalist sentiment. Now, we are going to contest in tandem with a national party. The UPPL has already undertaken several initiatives to bring about a permanent solution for the Bodo people. For 40 years, there was great unrest in the Bodo-dominated region. However, the NDA signed two treaties -- in 2003 and 2020 -- with the aim of ushering peace into the region. We also have to thank the NDA for the setting up of a central university here. They have also done much to usher in peace. As UPPL, we have a commitment towards the people and therefore, we have joined the AGP and BJP," he said.

Stating that his party desires a safe, secure, corruption-free and progressive BTR, the BTC chief Boro said that the UPPL's main motive is to foster bonhomie among the various communities.

Boro further expressed that the BTR region is in need of a government that can implement all the tenets of the latest treaty.

"People associate elections in BTR with violence. However, I am hoping that we will have a fair and free election this time around," Boro added.
