The BJP is trying to bring the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill by negating the Assam Accord. Assam had a very tough time as it had anti- foreigners’ agitation from 1979 to 1985. The six- years of Assam agitation pushed Assam backward. After a lot of consultation, the Assam Accord was signed on August 15, 1985.
Bordoloi Turned down heavily on the BJP government and said that it has been attacking the Indian constitution by giving citizenship to the people based on religion. He said, “The Assam Accord gives a deadline of 1951 to identify illegal migrants and do not discriminate against the people based on their religion. Whoever came to the state prior to 1951 is a citizen of India.”
