Guwahati, January 20, 2020:

"Assam Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is trying to mislead the people of Assam so that the CAA Andolan (movement) weakens", alleged 3-time former CM Tarun Gogoi, taking a jibe at his political ally-turned-rival Himanta Biswa Sarma of the BJP. Gogoi further claimed that the saffron party is attempting to confuse the people regarding the 'Assam Accord' to open the doors to a Bangladeshi influx.

Addressing the press here today, Gogoi added, "Especially in case of Assam Accord. He wants to imply as if he is the only Doctorate, Mr. Know-it-all, be it in Politics or be it social service."

"This BJP party is a liar...they know very well how to lie to the people. When PM Modi can lie...everyone knows that PM Modi’s statement on detention centres. He denied the existence of those centres, even after knowing that there are 6 centres in Assam", said the former CM, taking a jibe at the PM, whom he has recently compared to Pakistan's father, Mohammad Ali Jinnah. "Amit Shah announced that there will be a nationwide NRC, Modi said that they had no discussions on the topic."

"We should not be surprised at Himanta Biswa Sarma’s lying nature. Everyone knows him and I have learned that in 2013, he had submitted an affidavit relating to NRC in the Supreme Court", Gogoi said, lambasting Biswa Sarma for casting doubts on the Assam Accord's cut-off date. "He had mentioned that the basis should be that is stated in the Assam Accord…March 25. The subcommittee that we had formed on NRC also said that it should be based on the Assam Accord. He had been the Minister of Assam Accord. Why is he stepping back from it now?"

"They are trying to neglect the Assam Accord to bring Bangladeshis. They can’t bring them if the Assam Accord is followed. The deadline is March 25, 1971" asserted Gogoi, adding "If the soul of the Assam Accord dies, there will be nothing left to do."
