Assam’s anti-Citizenship Amendment Act leader Akhil Gogoi has been tested positive for COVID-19 on July 9th, 2020. His result came after two KMSS leaders Bitu Sonowal and Dhanjya Konwar were tested positive for the lethal virus on July 8th, 2020.

Sonowal and Dhajya were admitted to the Mohendra Mohan Choudhury Hospital (MMCH) for medical assistance. Later, on July 9th, 2020 morning, both of them were shifted to the  Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH).

Inside Northeast contacted voices who have been critical against the matter of the arrest. Assamese renowned filmmaker, Jahnu Barua said, "I can't take a legal position. I am talking about a humanitarian inspection and in that Akhil Gogoi should have been given a bail due to the coronavirus pandemic. Also, how did the virus spread in prison?"

MP Ajit Bhuyan too spoke on the matter. "We have been saying this for some time now. This is a conspiracy aimed for 2021 elections. So far Akhil Gogoi, Debojani Kalita and others have been kept under the prison. Not only this, but Assam govt also is not giving proper treatment to Akhil Gogoi and he has a high fever and along with that blood pressure and piles. Are they slowly trying to kill him to facilitate their business activities?".

But, the issue here is even though the state wants Akhil Gogoi to be inside the prison what might be the motive? Inside Northeast spoke to Tarun Rangad, editor of Raiot who spoke on the matter. "Akhil Gogoi and KMSS at this point of time are the only mass opposition to the lawless Assam govt
