As the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 becomes the most controversial issue of Assam, the Communist Party of India-Marxist accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of "trying to push through the bill" by any means.
The CPI-M accused ths BJP of playing divisive politics as they are trying to push through the bill despite the poeple Assam opposing it.
Deben Bhattacharya, secretary of Assam State unit of the CPI-M said that there are reports circulating that the BJP and the government are planning to pass the Bill or issue an ordinance.
Bhattacharya added that it is also a common knowledge to every Indian that the Indian Constitution does not allow citizenship on the basis of religion but the BJP is trying to provide citizenship to non-muslims from Bangladesh, Afghanistan and Pakistan. He claimed that the view of supporting the bill is like a conspiracy to create a hate campaign against the Muslims in Assam.
He also alleged that the BJP is also creating a rift between the Bengali and Assamese-speaking communities in the state political benefits. "For doing so, some of the BJP leaders are also making provocative statements to instigate the Bengali Hindu population", he added.
The CPI-M further asked the people of Assam to unite irrespective of their caste or creed. He asked the people to oppose the bill.
