Streets of Assam capital Guwahati erupted in chaos today as a crowd of BJP workers rallied through the streets in a show of protest against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s recent statement where he branded Prime Minister Narendra Modi a “thief”.
The march, which began from Ganeshguri’s Gopal Boro School, was to end at the Congress’ headquarters at Rajiv Bhawan, which the BJP supporters meant to gherao, but it was cut short approximately 1 km short of the intended destination by authorities who barricaded the road. In a show of solidarity, minions of BJP marched through the streets shouting slogans of “Bharat Mata ki Jai” (glory to Mother India).
A protester had the following to say “Since the last hundred years the Supreme Court has been entangled in a struggle against the Congress. Supreme Court’s judgement has been rejected by the Congress and their leader Rahul Gandhi has insulted the people of India, the Supreme Court as well as Prime Minister Modi. Supreme Court, which primarily consists of people affiliated with the Congress, has already clarified that there is no scam relating to the Rafale deal.
All this time we have not said anything despite the Congress’ allegations of a scam by the BJP, but now that Rahul Gandhi has insulted the BJP, called Modi a ‘thief’ and refused to accept the judgement, we demand that Rahul Gandhi and the Congress apologize to the people of India, the SC and the PM.”
Congress party members had also gathered at Rajiv Bhawan to meet the protesters, and upon failure of the BJP to show up, Deep Majumdar Baruah, a Congress secretary, in an interview with InsideNE, commented: “We were, in fact, waiting for the BJP to show up since they have lost in 5 states. They have lost their standing and we were in fact expecting them to sign up for the Congress since they have been routed in 5 states. We were waiting with Congress membership forms and refreshments, expecting them to leave the BJP and join us. But we saw no trace of them in the 4-5 hours that we waited. Not one of them turned up, perhaps discouraged by the BJP high command. We welcome them. Let them leave the BJP and join us.”
Senior Congress leader Rockybul Hussain was also present at Rajiv Bhawan and dismissed this protest as a sign of desperation from the BJP. He commented: “The BJP is afraid of Rahul Gandhi because their secrets have been revealed. Usually, the opposition protests the ruling party, but in this case, it is the other way around. This means the Congress is on the verge of forming the government. Only formalities are left. This protest is proof of that.” He concluded by stating that the Congress will win the MP (Lok Sabha) elections and Rahul Gandhi will be Prime Minister.
