GUWAHATI: Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) Deputy Chief Executive Member (CEM) Govinda Basumatary has commented upon the recent political developments in the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) and said that anything is possible in politics, even an alliance between the United People's Party Liberal (UPPL) and Bodoland People's Front (BPF), two major forces of BTR.

"To say, in politics nothing is impossible. Sometimes we have seen that the opposite parties have come together and running the government. If that happens here also then it should not come as a surprise," said Dy. BTC Chief Basumatary in an exclusive interview with InsideNE.

"All the political activities depend on the political situations," Basumatary expressed further.

Recently, BPF leader Durga Das Boro has claimed that the BPF has a majority in the BTC and also urged the state government and Governor to let them prove their majority on the floor through the secret ballot process. Boro also asserted that if CM Himanta Biswa Sarma puts forward a proposal to "work together" in the future, BPF will accept the proposal for the betterment of the region and its people.

Currently, Bharatiya Janata Party-led NDA holds the majority with its ally UPPL in the BTC. BJP's former ally BPF was ousted for the first time in 17 years of its existence by the newly formed BJP-UPPL alliance in the last BTC Election in December 2020.

In a reference to BPF's claim to prove a majority in floor test of BTC, Basumatary said, "BJP has got 11 seats in the BTC election whereas UPPL got 12. BPF originally had 17 seats but now they are left with 11 only. Moreover, the BJP is in an agreement to run this government with UPPL for a full term. I do not think that BJP will topple the government with someone else."

"There is no symptom of BPF forming the council in BTR as of now," Basumatary opined.

"The Chief Minister always expresses his full support to UPPL. Above that he is the head of this government as well," Basumatary added.

Basumatary also expressed that though it's sometimes hard to be in alliance with a national party and to push regional interests but he's very much satisfied with the newly elected Himanta Biswa Sarma led Assam government and there is cooperation not only among the leaders of both the parties but among the workers as well.
