GUWAHATI: The Assam Government has decided to reopen schools for elementary students of classes Nursery to VI from January 1, 2020, announced Education Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

"We had not opened classes up to Class 6. On the basis of discussions held with primary school teachers, we have decided to reopen schools for elementary classes from the 1st of January onwards. However, the reopening of classes will be staggered -- we will announce when the classes will be held. A detailed SOPs will be released by the Health Department," Sarma stated, adding, "It is sufficient to say at this moment that the elementary schools' classes will resume from December."
The decision to reopen schools has been taken in accordance with the Union Home Ministry’s order which allowed states to start classes after October 15 depending on the COVID-19 situation in their respective states.
In a related development, the Assam government has decided to reopen hostels on a “limited scale” for the final year students amid the Government’s initiative to resume normal activities.

“Owing to the improved situation regarding COVID-19 in the state, we have resolved to reopen hostels in a limited manner from December 15 onwards. Which means that only final year students will be able to return to the schools. If it is a residential school, students from Classes 10 and 12 will be able to return. In case of colleges, students from classes 10, 12, degree final year, and polytechnic, engineering final year shall be able to return from December 15 onwards,” Sarma added.
