Guwahati, February 12, 2019:

The hue-and-cry over the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2016 continues as we enter the last stages of the current Rajya Sabha session. The Bill was not tabled in the Upper House as members’ continued protests over several issues led to an early adjournment.

The controversial Bill was not raised amid the drama that has been going on in the national capital, but it seems like the relief of the indigenous people of Northeast India will be short-lived as Home Minister Rajnath Singh is set to move the Bill on Wednesday. It is again scheduled among the Bills to be brought up as announced in the ‘Legislative Business’ list for tomorrow.

It is to be mentioned that the highly unpopular legislation has witnessed several protests from several political parties in the Northeast, including the NDA’s allies in the region. Several political leaders of the region, including the Meghalaya CM Conrad Sangma are camped out in the national capital to gather support from the opposition to vote against the Bill once it is brought up.
