The Hailakandi District Commissioner has imposed section 144 CrPC following the clash that broke out between the administration and the Muslim community people who visited a Mosque at Marwari Patti in Hailakandi.
According to sources, a group of people belonging to the Muslim community visited the Mosque for Friday prayers. As the Ramjan is going on, numbers of people in the group were too large to acquaint within the hall for which they decided to read ‘Namaaz’ on the road. However, the administration did not allow fearing traffic issues. As a result of which the clash broke out.
In an order issued at around 1 pm here today, District Magistrate Keerthi Jalli said curfew has been clamped in town areas as 'there exists strange relation between groups who are trying to indulge in violence and create communal violence' necessitating the administration to take immediate action 'in view of the present events' to ensure speedy remedy for maintenance of public order and tranquility.
CRPF and Assam Rifles have been deployed in trouble-torn and sensitive areas. The administration has sought the help of the Army to bring the situation under control.
Jalli has appealed everyone to exercise restraint and to maintain peace and tranquility.
Stringent action will be taken against anyone moving around, as per provisions of law, she warned.
The curfew will remain in force until further orders.
