TEZPUR: Tezpur MLA Brindaban Goswami, who filed nomination as an independent, for the Assam assembly election 2021, withdrew his nomination today.

The Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) legislator and former minister had filed nomination on March 9 after he was denied a ticket from the seat by the regional party.

The AGP has fielded Prithiraj Rava, son of cultural icon Bishnu Prasad Rava, instead of Goswami from Tezpur.

Goswami resigned from the AGP after being denied a ticket and filed nomination as an independent. However, allegedly pressurised by political heavyweights, Goswami withdrew his nomination today.

Goswami has not stated whether he would extend support to the AGP candidate Rava though.

In a similar development, Kamalpur AGP MLA Satyabrat Kalita has also decided not to contest the polls as an independent. Kalita was also denied party ticket this time after the constituency went to the BJP in seat sharing, and was also to contest on a party ticket from Hajo.
