BTC: Composite Floor Test adjourned for 10 mins amid hue-and-cry

KOKRAJHAR: A tense atmosphere prevails in the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) Secretariat in Kokrajhar, where a hue-and-cry has erupted amid the ongoing Composite Floor Test to determine who -- Promod Bodo or Hagrama Mohimary -- has the consensus to become the Chief Executive Member (CEM).

The composite floor test, the first in the history of the Council, officially got underway at 10 am in the morning today. While the proceedings were going on, members of the BPF, including its supremo Hagrama Mohilary, staged a protest, claiming "death of democracy". The BPF party members carried members and hounded the Pro-tem Speaker. Consequently, the floor test was adjourned for 10 minutes.

Proceedings have now resumed, and oath-taking is now going on at the Secretariat.

Necessary arrangements and preparations have been completed for the test with strict security deployment and observation in BTC Legislative Assembly hall Bodofa Nwgwr in Kokrajhar.

BPF won 17 Seats (later one member joined in BJP), UPPL 12, BJP 9, GSP 1 and Congress 1 (later joined in BJP).

The much-awaited voting for the BTC began on December 7 with over 77.01 per cent voters exercising their franchise in the first phase of polling for 21 seats in Udalguri and Baksa districts, where 130 candidates have contested.

A total of 23,87,422 voters in the two phases exercised their franchise to elect their representatives for the local council, formed in 2003 and elections being held since 2005.
