Kokrajhar: Emmaneul Mussahary, the General Secretary of the Bodoland People's Front (BPF) announced on October 23 that he is working for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the lead up to the polls in the BTC Council which have been deferred due to coronavirus crisis.

Addressing media persons, he said that for 3 months or so, he has been working "fully for the BJP" and "getting on the campaign programmes."

Upon being asked why he chose to work for the BJP after ditching the BPF, he said that there are "several reasons" behind his decision. The leader has resolved to formally join the BJP along with 20,000 odd supporters in the coming few months.

He said that he has warmed to the BJP because "the BJP's presence in the BTC is required for the welfare of the communities in the BTC." He further added that the people in the Bodo-dominated region are slowly starting to get accustomed to the BJP as its vision regarding the region is now "clear."

"We will fight for the BJP in the Council elections as it is the springboard for the Assembly elections. Thus, we will fight tooth-and-nail for the BJP so that we can form the government once again," he said.

Reacting to accusations that he is supporting both the BJP and United People's Party Liberal (UPPL), he said that he is firmly supporting the BJP and these allegations are "imagination." "Some vested interest people are coming up with these allegations and there is not a shard of truth behind it," he told the media.

He further added that the BJP will "comfortably" win the election and will win 14-21 seats out of the 26 that it is contesting in.

It needs mention here that the Gauhati High Court has directed the state election commission to initiate the process to conduct the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) polls by December of 2020.

A division bench comprising Chief Justice (Acting) N Kotiswar Singh and Justice Manish Choudhury gave the order after hearing a petition filed by the People’s Joint Action Committee for Bodoland Movement, the Bodoland Janajati Suraksha Manch and the Bodoland Citizens Justice Forum.
