CAA Row: Lachit Sena Leader Sringkhal Chaliha to be Presented Before Court Today

Guwahati, December 26, 2019:

The Central Organising Secretary of Lachit Sena, Sringkhal Chaliha will be presented before the Kamrup Judicial Magistrate Court at 2 pm on Thursday.

According to reports, senior Supreme Court advocate, Upamanyu Hazarika will be defending his case at the court.

On the other hand, the Crime Investigation Department (CID) had launched a search operation at the Lachit Sena's leader's residence in Sivasagar district.

It may be mentioned here that Sringkhal Chaliha was picked up by Dibrugarh police from Barbaruah Puja field of the Assam’s Dibrugarh district, after addressing a gathering at a ‘Citizenship Amendment Act’ protest.

While addressing the gathering on December 23, Chaliha said, “Akhil Gogoi has been jailed…Jiten Dutta has been jailed…Amitabh Goswami has been arrested. I have received intel that I will also be arrested soon. But, even if I am jailed and shot, the protests have to go on.”

Meanwhile, Sringkhal’s father Pranabjit Chaliha has asked the people of Assam to observe December 26, Thursday as a ‘black day’ from morning 6 am to 8 pm in the evening. He has urged the people to switch off the lights in market areas, houses, and vehicles to mark their protest demanding the release of his son.

Earlier, Pranabjit Chaliha was also seen taking part in the protests against C(A)A and stated, “If Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal would have been the King during the fight against Mughals, then Lachit Borphukan would have also been lodged in jail.”
