Guwahati, December 21, 2019:

The Latasil ground on Saturday reverberated with the words of Sudhakantha Bhupen Hazarika, sung by the daughters of the soil as a mark of protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act (or CAA). They belted out:

“মানুহে মানুহৰ বাবে

যদিহে অকনো নাভাবে

অকনো সহানুভূতিৰে

ভাৱিব কোনেনো কোৱা? সমনীয়া..!”

(Manuhe Manuhar Babe,

Jodihe Ekuke Nabhabe,

Akanu Hahanubhutire,

Bhabibo Kunenu Kua?

Hamoniya...!)

Sung by the “নাৰীশক্তি” (Nari Shakti), the women who had participated in the massive protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act under the banner of the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU), the song sent out a clear message to the Centre that the Act won’t be accepted.

Through the song, the women also urged the people of Assam to join the protests against the CAA that have been sustained, even as 10 days have passed since the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill that has turned into an Act, now.

The “নাৰীশক্তি অৱস্থান ধৰ্মঘট” (Nari Shaktir Abasthan Dharnaghat- sit-in demonstration by women) was attended by many the prominent women figures of the State from all walks of Assamese society.

Few of the luminaries who were a part of the event are -- veteran film actor Chetana Das, Barasha Rani Bishaya, and many regional artists including singers, lecturers, academicians and others.

The women also called out Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to stand with the Assamese, and appealed the BJP government at the helm to immediately scrap the contentious Bill-turned-Act.

It is to be mentioned here that the contentious Act has not only led to a situation of unrest in Assam, but also in the the Hindi heartland, where massive protests have erupted against the allegedly "communal" and "unconstitutional" Bill-turned-Act.
