Union Minister Kiren Rijiju sought to clear the party’s stand regarding the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill while addressing the press on Tuesday.
“I have cleared the issue about the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill. Again, I am clearing the issue. BJP has committed to implementing the Bill to the rest of the country. But, it is mentioned in the manifesto that the party will only enact the Bill after consultations of the people of the North-East. People need not have misgiving about the issue.”
Rijiju further added that certain special provisions will be made especially to the people of the North-East. “I have given my commitment and the party has done so too. Special provisions will be made before it is implemented in the North-East. It will only be implemented after holding consultations with people who are not clear on the issue. It is a written commitment that we have made”, he said.
It may be mentioned that the people of North-East have been up-in-arms ever since the BJP party announced that it would implement the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill in its Manifesto on Tuesday. The Bill was passed in the Lok Sabha on 8 January but lapsed at the Rajya Sabha in February.
