KOKRAJHAR: A dreaded cattle mafia involved in the international illegal cattle smuggling business was shot by police in Kokrajhar while trying to escape from police custody.

The cattle mafia has been identified as Sorangi Chinna, a resident of Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh.

The incident took place today when the accused eluded the cops by stealing the sub-inspector's gun and tried to run into a jungle. The team of police officials to fired 2 rounds at Chinna in an attempt to avoid any danger and the accused sustained an injury in his left leg.

This has occurred when Chinna named a number of his link men during interrogation and took the police to the Sukanjohra area at 1 am to locate a few co-accused residences.

He was rushed to RNB Civil Hospital in Kokrajhar and admitted right away, but subsequently, the accused was referred to Barpeta Medical College for better treatment, and he is now stable and safe, said Surjeet Singh Panesar, the SP of Kokrajhar.

Chinna was arrested three days ago by Kokrajhar police in the Gossaigaon area of Kokrajhar district on charges of being involved in the international illegal cattle trade.

A case No. 46/21 has been registered against the accused at Gosaigaon police station and further and further investigation will be undertaken, said police.
