GUWAHATI: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has welcomed the Centre's decision to extend Border Security Forces (BSF) in the state.

Taking to Twitter, the Chief Minister said, "Assam welcomes extension of BSF’s operational jurisdiction"

He added that this move will serve as a strong deterrent for defeating cross border smuggling & illegal infiltration while working in coordination with state police.

" It will strengthen national security & national interest", he added.

The Union government recently amended the BSF Act giving the security force authorization to undertake search, seizure and arrest within a larger 50 km stretch, instead of the existing 15 km, from the international border in Assam along with Punjab and West Bengal.

Reportedly, the BSF’s stretch of jurisdiction along the Indian border in Gujarat, however, has been slashed to 50 km from an earlier 80 km, while the same in Rajasthan stays constant at 50 km.
