Guwahati, January 6, 2019:

The brave men of the CID (Criminal Investigation Bureau) know no rest. In the wee hours of the morning (1 am), bureau agents conducted a search operation at Koinadhara at Khanapara near the Assam-Meghalaya border.

The search had been conducted in connection with CID PS Case no. 06/2018. During the search operations, eleven trucks were found to be carrying coal without having the necessary documents. Of the eleven trucks, eight were taken to the CID campus whereas three were taken to the Basistha Police Station in Guwahati for safe-keeping.

It may be mentioned that the coal industry has recently come under fire due to illegal mining practices in Meghalaya. The recent incident in East Jaintia Hills’ Ksan where fifteen miners were trapped after flooding in an illegal ‘rat-hole’ mine has brought the illegal coal racket in Meghalaya in plain view of the world. The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has slapped a fine of Rs. 100 crores on the Meghalaya government as punitive measures for failing to curb illegal mining.
