All Assam Students' Union (AASU) General Secretary Lurinjyoti Gogoi on Sunday turned down heavily on the BJP-led administration in the state for the enactment of the controversial Citizenship Amendment Act. He further added that CM Sonowal has lost the right to say "Joi aai axom" (glory to Assam) for allegedly "betraying" the State.
Addressing a massive crowd in Guwahati during a cultural protests against the C(A)A, Gogoi said, "The Government that has put us in peril must be driven away -- that must be our resolve."
Gogoi also condemned the Government for alleged incidents of "brutality" against the citizens who took to the streets to protest against the enactment of the Bill. "They have killed...charged with lathis...five have been martyred...36 are admitted in hospitals with injuries. If it is a sin to admit one's love for motherland, then thousands of Assam are ready to commit such crimes" Lurin said.
Gogoi at the same time said that the protesters must not resort to violence, and accused the Government of attempting to curb the protests.
The AASU leader also turned down heavily on Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and alleged that he has insulted the motherland by being silent amid the raging the protests. "He has lost the right to say Joi Aai Axom", Lurin said.
It may be mentioned here that the AASU, which took active part in the six years' long Assam Agitation against foreigner infiltration, is once again spearheading the protests in Assam. The student body has resolved to defeat the Bill in the Supreme Court, and also sought support from the other student bodies in the region (under the umbrella body NESO) to continue the pushback against the legislation.
