In Commemoration of Women's Day, Gauhati University Students Take Pledge Against Human Trafficking

Guwahati, March 9, 2020:

Department of Women’s Studies, Gauhati University celebrated International Women's Day on March 6 by organizing a series of events. This year the Department decided to work intensively on the issues of Human Trafficking.

The celebration started with the campaign to pledge against Human Trafficking. As a mark of this pledge, a red cross is drawn on the palm of the person who agreed to combat Human Trafficking. A badge which states, ‘I pledge to stop human trafficking #awareandempowered #iamagainsthumantraffiking’ was offered to those who took part in this campaign.

Prof. Pratapjyoti Handique, vice-chancellor of the university was the first to take this pledge followed by the Hemanta Kumar Nath, Registrar of the university, Officers of GU, faculties, staff and the students of the University.

An awareness drive on Human trafficking was carried within the GU premise by selling handmade bookmarks made by the student of the Department where quotes and data on Human Trafficking were featured. It was distributed to university officials, faculties, staff, and students.

To encourage the upcoming entrepreneur of the Department food and craft stalls were set up. It was meant both for the alumni and the present students where they were encouraged to sell their products. It was organized on the ground floor of the New Academic Building and was also a form of fundraising for the upcoming outreach and extension programs of the Department.

A Street play on "Anti-human trafficking" was organized in different locations within the GU campus. The most effective was the one enacted in BKB Colony (the residential quarters of cleaners of GU). The residents of the colony expressed that they look forward to more such programs and are immensely benefitted.

The Department of Women’s Studies intents to carry a year-long program on Human Trafficking in the memory of late Dr. Syeda Sakira Sahin who along with the Department was working on this issue in collaboration with Shakti Vahini and US Consulate, Kolkata. This year-long program got initiated with a memorial lecture by Surendra Kuman, IGP, Assam Police on 11th, February 2020 where he delivered a lecture on "Human Trafficking: The Emerging Trends in India and Assam".
