GUWAHATI: Right after Bharatiya Janata Party's candidate from Majuli Sarbananda Sonowal, former chief minister of Assam, left for New Delhi to meet top brass of the party for a probable position at Modi's to-be-extended cabinet, Assam Congress' senior leader cum Majuli president and candidate Rajib Lochan Pegu tendered his resignation from his position.

BJP legislator from Majuli Sarbananda Sonowal might get a portfolio in Modi's cabinet by this month and that will vacant the Majuli LAC.

Assam is to go to by-polls in another two to three months for five seats and Majuli is likely to be one of them. With Sonowal's visit today to New Delhi, it is all but confirmed.

At a crucial time like this when Pegu, the former Congress MLA and minister of Tarun Gogoi's cabinet, tendered his resignation from his post, it stirred up speculations that Pegu's might be joining the saffron brigade soon.

Though InsideNE tried to contact Rajib Lochan Pegu, the calls went unresponded; instead, his son Bitupan Pegu has confirmed to InsideNE that Rajib Lochan has resigned acknowledging his moral responsibility for the party's defeat in Majuli LAC in the recently concluded Assam Assembly Polls.

Weeks earlier, four-time Congress MLA from Mariani Rupjyoti Kurmi left the party and joined the rival BJP camp.

Congress leader Jury Sharma Bordoloi has also left the party with 50 members of the Guwahati District Congress Committee.

Amid all these recent development, the development of Pegu's likely switch to the BJP is not something to be ignored completely.
