GUWAHATI: Assam Congress leader Debabrata Saikia has written to Jagadish Mukhi, the honorary chancellor of Gauhati University, to re-think the release of around 50 contractual teachers as such a move could make the students' future "uncertain."

Saikia pointed out that the University had recently introduced some new courses due to which new people had to be brought in to teach the students on a contractual basis. He further added in his communique that contractual teachers have also been appointed in the Dibrugarh, and Kumar Bhaskar Verma Sanskrit universities, among others.

If the government does pay heed to this very pertinent matter, it will be most unfortunate for the students as well as youths of the state, he stated, adding that many contractual teachers in other universities across Assam are also staring at an uncertain fate as funds have not been released.

Saikia has urged Mr. Mukhi to reconsider the matter as a "former teacher" and discuss the matter with chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to arrive at a decision that will be acceptable to all.

The Gauhati University has cancelled the appointment of all its contractual teaching faculty with effect from June 30, as per a notification issued by the university. The notice, dated July 2 and signed by the registrar, said the decision was taken following a communication from the office of the governor, who is also the Chancellor of the university.

The move will affect about 50 contractual teachers of the state's oldest university, which was established in 1948, a Gauhati University Teachers' Association (GUTA) source said.

GU vice-chancellor PJ Handique on Monday wrote to chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, seeking his advice to break the impasse.
