Contraband goods worth Rs 16 lakh seized in Assam's Hailakandi

Hailakandi: In a recent incident, a team of Hailakandi police in Assam apprehended a group of criminals and seized contraband items worth Rs. 16 lakh.

Acting on secret information about the transshipment of contraband goods, Hailakandi district police swung into action and intercepted a vehicle bearing registration No.AS 11 GC-7173 at around 2 am here on Monday, October 26.

Disclosing this, Superintendent of Police, Pabindra Kumar Nath said the vehicle (Bolero Pick-up van) was intercepted by the OC, Katlicherra Police Station on Hailakandi-Bhairabi (Mizoram National Highway while it was coming from Mizoram side towards Hailakandi direction.)

During thorough search of the vehicle, 18 bags of betel nut and 46 cartons of Myanmar manufactured cigarettes valued at approximately Rs.16 lakh were seized.

Two persons have been apprehended namely Samim Ahmed Talukdar, son of Sirajuddin and Jainal Hussein Talukdar, son of Alauddin Talukdar, both of whom hail from village Bode Mohakal under Badarpur Police Station of Karimganj district.

A case No.318/20 under Section 379 IPC read with Section 5(1) under Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act, 2003 has been registered at Katlicherra Police Station. Interrogation of the arrested persons is on.
